Why continue to pay software license fees when there is software that does the same task for free?
Open Source software is the way to go. Open Source software is a general term for free programs created by software programmers around the world. Using Open Source software saves money and provides the features you need.
Here is a list of free software that I have found very useful (in alphabetical order):
Joomla!
One of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. The term “Content Management System” means you get a complete Web site that is easy to update. Joomla! powers over 20 million websites. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Some Content Management Systems cost thousands of dollars, but Joomla! is free, easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable.
I found that learning all of its amazing features can be time consuming.
This book will help you learn Joomla! quickly.
(The book is not free…but worth it!)
OpenOffice
This is a GREAT office software suite that gives you a word processor, spreadsheet, etc. It can open, save and convert documents to all of the popular formats.
PDFCreator
Create a PDF document from any other document simply by printing the original document to PDFCreator. It is so easy to use!
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a community developed, linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need – a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more. All of this for $0! When I first loaded Ubuntu on a computer I thought, “It’s amazing how much they give you for free!”
UltraApps IssueManager
A web-based solution for tracking issues, bugs and tasks for any type of project. It is a breeze to install on a Web site and easy for everyone to use.
